What is a barcode?

Barcode or Global TradeItemNumber (GTIN) is a 14-bit international item number intended for use in computer systems. Developed and supported by the international organization GS1. Coding is designed so that manufacturers of the product can label it without prior agreement with retailers, and retailers based on such labeling can carry out all the necessary accounting operations without any preparation, without confusing it with other products.

Why are products marked with barcodes?

In modern trade relations, each product, in parallel with physical existence, has its “virtual reflection” in the computer systems of enterprises in which the product is accounted for and in which every transaction with the product is recorded.

It is impractical to manually enter information about product transactions: it takes a lot of time, and there is a high probability of entering erroneous data. A barcode helps to solve the problem. The information encoded in the barcode can be automatically read using special devices – barcode scanners.

In the bar code, only a single-digit designation of the product is provided – its identification number.

A business entity that wishes to join the global GS1 system and obtain unique identification numbers of GS1 barcodes for its goods and (or) GLN numbers for electronic data exchange with trading partners must become a member of the “GS1 Ukraine” Association, which is an official representative in Ukraine of the international organization GS1 – the leading global organization for the development and implementation of global standards of solutions for increasing the efficiency and transparency of production, supply and trade.
